Hot Toddy

What’s a Toddy?

There’s been a void in my adult life, and its name is Hot Toddy. By some fluke of probability, I had never heard of this holiday beverage before coming to MarketSpice. As the weather chilled and the holidays approached, my stressed coworkers began muttering ‘hot toddy’ under their breaths, as if reminding themselves of the reward promised them at our annual holiday party. Unfamiliar with the beverage, I decided to do a little research into this wintertime treat.

The classic Hot Toddy started as an old folk remedy for the common cold. It normally contains whiskey, lemon and honey. Occasionally, certain medicinal herbs and spices were included to combat cold symptoms. Our Hot & Spicy Winter Toddy mix can be used to make a classic style hot toddy, by adding 2 teaspoons of the dry mix into a mug of hot water. Add an ounce of dark liquor and enjoy. If you want to boost the toddy’s cold fighting properties, replace the hot water with an herbal tea. We recommend either our Cold Comfort Tea or Licorice Spice Tea.

While the classic Hot toddy mix is adequate on its own, the hot buttered toddy is in a completely different league. With ingredients including rum, butter and ice cream, I don’t need to tell you….it’s delicious! Each package of Hot & Spicy Winter Toddy mix comes with a set of instructions for making buttered toddy batter, which can be stored in the freezer for up to a month. With all the prep work done in advance, you can make a hot buttered toddy with minimal fuss.

Start by blending a package of our Hot & Spicy Winter Toddy mix into a measured amount of butter (exact measurements are based on the size package of Winter Toddy mix used.) Then fold the mixture into softened vanilla ice cream. Refreeze the batter and store in an airtight container. To make a hot buttered toddy, stir 2 – 3 tablespoons of the batter into a mug of hot water and add an ounce of your favorite dark spirits (we recommend rum.) Or you can leave out the spirits for a delicious non-alcoholic drink.

Whether you’re trying to kick a cold or just want to enjoy a luxurious treat, the Hot Toddy deserves a place in your holiday festivities…..and throughout the winter season!

I recommended Cold Comfort or Licorice Spice for a classic style toddy, but feel free to use your favorite tea.

Place your order for our Hot & Spicy Winter Toddy soon so you can enjoy for the holiday season and consider adding a few extra packages for stocking stuffers or hostess gifts! (Available throughout the year.)

Happy Holidays!
